About Batteries & Their Problems
Batteries find application in many things today, from mobile phone batteries to boat batteries. Batteries are used not only in small appliances, but also find application in heavy industry appliances like the scissor lift or cranes. There are many famous battery manufacturers like Panasonic, Energizer, Century Batteries, Sanyo, etc.
Some History about Batteries:
They say an early form of the electromechanical battery, known as the Baghdad Battery, may have been used in antiquity, but the Italian physicist Alessandro Volta brought about a modern development in the field of batteries with the Voltaic Pile in the 1800s. In 1780 the Italian physiologist and anatomist Luigi Galavani experimented on a frog with the Leyden Jars, following which Volta recognised the current in the body called Galvanic cells. Furthering this study, Volta discovered the Voltaic Pile, which acted as a battery.
After this, Michael Faraday came up with the theory of how cations are attracted to cathodes and anions are attracted to anodes, which explained the cause of the constant corrosion. With this discovery they could make more stable batteries called wet cell, which was made by Daniel Cell in 1836, which used liquid electrolytes. This, too, had its problems, as the liquid kept leaking and causing a nuisance. By the end of the nineteenth century, the dry cell was invented in which the liquid electrolyte was replaced by a paste, giving us today’s popular batteries.
Batteries, if not used correctly, result in damaging the battery and can even damage the appliance. You also need to use the correct charger for the correct rechargeable battery, as that increases charging capacity and improves the life of the battery. Even then, sometimes there are problems concerning the batteries. Let’s discuss a few.
Some reasons for Battery Failures:
• Is the battery being used in the same application for which it was designed? It is important that the battery be used in the application for which it was made. Like the automotive battery cannot be used for a deep cycle application.
• Is the application and battery size in accordance? By this we mean if you are using a smaller power battery, like a 6V engine battery for a 12V engine, then you will definitely face problems.
• Is the Vehicle using excessive electrical accessories, especially those which did not come fitted originally? Many times there are many extra electrical appliances added to the original vehicle, which increases the load on the battery. Examples include amplifiers, Winches, lights, music systems, etc. To meet the needs of all these appliances, the battery power capacity needs to be higher and ultimately the battery output needs to exceed the charge consumed, otherwise the battery will always be discharged.
• Is the battery overcharged? This is a common occurrence which results in the battery being damaged. The overcharging causes the electrolyte in the battery to evaporate and increases the shedding of the active materials in the battery.
• Is the battery undercharged? Yes, undercharging can damage the battery as well. Undercharging increases the sulphation rates, which increases the retardation of the battery from accepting any charge. If the battery is stored for too long without charging, this results in sulphation and thus reduces the life of the battery as well.
• Are there too many unnecessary vibrations? Vibrations are a major damaging cause of premature battery failure. The vibration causes the fallen material to get collected in the mud rack at the base of the battery and thus makes it impossible to create a short across the cells.
• Is the battery discharged below 10.5 volts? Discharging a battery below 10.5 volts is called deep discharge and should not be done regularly to automotive batteries, as this is an incorrect application.
