Why you should include wheel chokes as part of your off road gear

Whenever you are off roading you will be faced with situations where your vehicle needs to be stabilised. These situations will include winching, repairs you need to carry out on your vehicle or even just when you are parking on a hill whilst your 4x4 is in gear – a wheel choke will stop it rolling all the way down. In these situations human nature tells u to find a large rock and jam it under the wheel to prevent the vehicle moving. However, this is not always a wise choice – you will not always find a suitable sized rock.

As you know when off roading you want to keep your load light. Although good sized wheel chokes are available they are constructed from heavy rubber. Well engineered wheel chokes are available which are constructed from aluminium making them very lightweight and ideal to pack with your recovery gear.

So when you are out on the trail offroading you can be in a situation and wonder to yourself how handy it would be to have a pair of wheel chokes.  A classic example is when you need to winch.  The vehicle that will be pulling needs to be anchored securely. If you are in an open area it can sometimes be difficult to find an anchor point that is suitable to strap the rear of the vehicle to. If this is the case then you need to choke the wheels. Any situation where you are required to raise the vehicle then one or more wheel chokes should be used as over everything else safety is the number one priority. Remember before you decide to crawl under your 4x4 make sure the wheels are choked before you even consider getting under the vehicle. Having good, reliable set of chokes is essential for stabilisation of your 4x4.

Aluminium wheel chokes are very strong, rated at 7,000 lbs per axle set.  This equates to nearly a full pull from a common size winch. They are very lightweight and weigh around 2.5 lbs each. They are collapsible and will fold down to about 10" x 7" x 1.5" each so don't take up much space when condensed down. Another feature is the raised knob design along with the ability for the wheel choke to be unfolded which allows it to be laid flat horizontally and be used as an emergency traction device.

Wheel chokes are very strong and light-weight and a highly recommended piece of recovery equipment when off roading.
